There will be a new captain at the helm for the U13 Magic program for the 2024 season. Make that co-captains!
Father and daughter duo Stewart and Siena McMillan have been named the new coaches for the 2024 season.
Siena has just recently completed her U17 season within the Magic program and she will draw on that experience as a player where she has won a provincial title, a Western Canadian championship and has competed at a Canadian National Championship. "These are experiences I want to provide and prepare the girls for."
“I am super excited to begin passing along the knowledge I’ve gained in my time playing. Serving as a role model for young athletes and sharing my passion for this sport has been something I’ve dreamed of doing since I was little." Said Siena when asked about the opportunity.
Stewart also shared a similar feeling "I am very humbled, but excited to be chosen to co-coach the U13 Magic team for 2024, to share the skills and knowledge and the love of the game that I have acquired over the years."
Stewart is a student of the game. He has coached various volleyball and baseball teams in the past but as his oldest daughter got into softball his focus shifted to the sport. "when Siena started playing fastpitch softball 7 or 8 years ago, I fell in love with the pace and unpredictability of this game."
With the knowledge he picked up from the countless coaching clinics where he had the opportunity to learn from coaches and former players from some of the top college teams in the States, including Oklahoma, Florida State, Stanford, Florida, LSU, and Mississippi State. Stewart has had success at the AA level at Provincials, highlighted by winning gold in 2020.
The McMillan duo are no strangers to the region, specifically for pitchers. The two of them have worked with the grassroots level and have done private pitching lessons for the last few years.
The program is excited to have Stewart and Siena on board to develop this U13 age group as players and as people. Siena's goals for the team? "I want the girls to feel confident in their abilities on the field. I aspire to create an environment where they learn what it is to be a good teammate and learn the life skills that team sports are meant to teach us. I truly believe these things will build a team that will find a great amount of success.”
Stewart has the same team values "I want to foster an intense love of this game, teach them a team first culture, teach them to love the process more than the results, and develop every player to their full potential, hopefully continuing the strong tradition in the Magic program of winning a provincial championship.
